Civil Engineering

About Department

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the oldest and well-established departments of RIT, established in 1983 with the inception of the institute. The department began with a Bachelor’s degree program in Civil Engineering with an intake of 60 students and has since evolved into a vibrant centre for quality education, research, consultancy, industry interaction, and community engagement.
The Autonomous Status granted to RIT in 2010 marked an important milestone in the academic development of the Department of Civil Engineering, providing greater flexibility in curriculum design, academic planning, assessment, and the introduction of innovative teaching and learning practices. This autonomy has enabled the department to respond more effectively to emerging developments in Civil Engineering and the evolving requirements of industry and society. Further strengthening this academic framework, RIT was granted Empowered Autonomy Status in 2024, providing enhanced opportunities for the department to promote academic innovation, outcome-based education, interdisciplinary learning, industry-oriented programs, and continuous quality improvement. These milestones have significantly supported the department’s efforts towards academic excellence, professional relevance, research, innovation, and holistic student development. At present, the department offers one Undergraduate (UG) program in Civil Engineering leading to a B. Tech. degree and two Postgraduate (PG) programs Structural Engineering (SE) with an intake of 24 and Construction Management (CM) with an intake of 18 leading to M. Tech. degrees. The programs are designed to provide students with strong theoretical foundations, practical competencies, professional skills, and exposure to emerging technologies in the built environment.
The UG and PG programs have been accredited/re-accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi, demonstrating the department’s sustained commitment to outcome-based education and quality assurance. From the academic year 2024–25, AICTE has approved collaboration and twinning programs in UG Civil Engineering and PG Structural Engineering, along with a working professional program, providing enhanced academic and professional learning opportunities. The department is also recognized as a Ph.D. Research Centre by Shivaji University, Kolhapur, strengthening its research and innovation ecosystem.

Infrastructure and Faculty
The department has 14 well-established laboratories supporting UG and PG teaching, research, consultancy, and testing activities. The laboratories are equipped with modern and sophisticated facilities, including a Digital Universal Testing Machine, Loading Frames, Concrete Scanner, Total Station, Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and other specialized equipment. Several laboratories have been strengthened and new facilities established through grants received under AICTE-MODROB, DST-FIST, RGSTC, Research Promotion Schemes (RPS), and Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The department has received research and infrastructure grants exceeding ₹1.05 crore, significantly contributing to laboratory modernization and research capacity. Industry-supported laboratory facilities further enhance practical learning and industry-oriented education.
The department has a team of experienced, dedicated, and highly qualified faculty members, with an average teaching experience exceeding 17 years, and the majority holding Ph.D. qualifications. Faculty members actively contribute to teaching, research, consultancy, curriculum development, professional activities, and academic governance. They regularly participate in and organize workshops, faculty development programs, training programs, seminars, and conferences and are invited to deliver expert lectures and keynote addresses at reputed institutions.
Faculty members also contribute to various University Committees, Boards of Studies, and academic and professional bodies. Their achievements include publications in reputed national and international journals and conferences, along with recognition through RIT Performance Awards and Promising Young Teacher Awards from the ISTE Chapter.

Research, Consultancy and Industry Interaction
Research and development form an integral part of the department’s academic activities. Faculty and students undertake research in areas including structural engineering, sustainable infrastructure, advanced construction materials, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources, construction management, and other emerging areas of Civil Engineering. PG and doctoral programs provide a strong foundation for advanced research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and technology development.
The department also provides extensive testing and consultancy services to government and semi-government organizations, private industries, contractors, builders, and other stakeholders. Testing facilities cover materials such as steel, cement, bricks, soil, water, concrete, and other construction materials. Consultancy services include structural auditing, third-party inspection, RCC and steel structural design, stability analysis, construction supervision, quality control, BOQ preparation, and project planning and scheduling using professional tools such as MSP. These activities provide valuable opportunities for faculty and students to engage with real-world engineering problems and practices.
The department has established 17 MoUs with reputed industries and organizations, supporting internships, training, collaborative projects, consultancy, professional exposure, and placement opportunities. Industry interaction is further strengthened through industrial visits, expert lectures, workshops, seminars, Sneh-Melava, alumni meets, parent meetings, and other stakeholder-engagement activities.

Student-Centric Education and Community Engagement
The department follows a student-centric approach that emphasizes technical competency, creativity, leadership, communication, teamwork, professional ethics, and lifelong learning. The Civil Engineering Students’ Association (CESA) provides a platform for students to participate in technical events, competitions, workshops, seminars, project activities, and co-curricular initiatives.
Students actively participate in national and international competitions, technical events, project competitions, seminars, and workshops. They also pursue competitive examinations and higher education, including examinations such as GRE, WRD, and MPSC, with several students achieving good ranks and progressing towards prestigious academic and professional careers. More than 100 students have been selected through the MPSC and UPSC examinations and have secured various positions in different government departments, such as Executive Engineer, Assistant Engineer, and other prestigious posts.
The department is strongly committed to societal development through Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) and Unnat Maharashtra Abhiyan (UMA). Community-connected projects enable students to understand rural and local infrastructure challenges and develop practical, sustainable, and socially relevant engineering solutions.
